The tools, templates and resources in this toolkit were compiled and developed by the CBR team at Access Alliance based on half a decade of implementing CBR projects. The CBR team at Access Alliance realized early on that having solid CBR training and tools was crucial to the success of its CBR projects. Thus, the team made it a priority to build CBR training and tools. In 2006, we created a part-time in-house researcher trainer position whose task was to develop innovative CBR training materials and tools and to deliver CBR training to peer researchers and other partners as per the need of our CBR projects. We also hired a consultant from the Catalyst Centre (Matthew Adams) to ground our CBR training and tools in a popular education framework.

This Quick-Start Guide is intended for community-based organizations that may be interested in partnering with academic researchers at UCSF to conduct community-based research. The Guide is a product of the Community Engagement Program of the UCSF Clinical & Translational Science Institute (CTSI). One of the Program’s primary aims is to assist both community-based organizations and UCSF-based researchers in the process of developing effective and mutually-satisfying collaborations on community-based research.

This toolkit is a “how to” guide for planning and implementing evaluation activities in cancer prevention and control programs. The Comprehensive Cancer Control Branch (CCCB) is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) Division of Cancer Prevention and Control (DCPC). CCCB developed this toolkit to help funded programs meet the evaluation requirements established for their cooperative agreements. This toolkit provides general guidance on evaluation principles and techniques, as well as practical templates and tools; therefore, grantees can continue to use the toolkit to support their evaluation efforts even as the program evolves and priorities change.

Internal and external coalition functioning is an important predictor of coalition success that has been linked to perceived coalition effectiveness, coalition goal achievement, coalition ability to support evidence-based programs, and coalition sustainability. Understanding which aspects of coalition functioning best predict coalition success requires the development of valid measures of empirically unique coalition functioning constructs. The goal of the present study is to examine and refine the psychometric properties of coalition functioning constructs in the following six domains: leadership, interpersonal relationships, task focus, participation benefits/costs, sustainability planning, and community support. The authors used factor analysis to identify problematic items in our original measure and then piloted new items and scales to create a more robust, psychometrically sound, multidimensional measure of coalition functioning. Scales displayed good construct validity through correlations with other measures. Discussion considers the strengths and weaknesses of the refined instrument.
