Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)

Resource

Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-informed, system-level approach that helps improve health outcomes for people with HIV by addressing risky substance use. SBIRT integrates three key steps into care:

  • Screening to assess the severity of alcohol and drug use.

  • Brief intervention to raise awareness of risks and strengthen motivation to change behaviors.

  • Referral to treatment for further evaluation and specialized care when needed.

Adapted for HIV care settings with input from experts and community members, SBIRT was tested through HRSA’s Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) E2i initiative and shown to support healthier outcomes.
