Qualitative Data Analysis Training: Organizing & Interpreting Qualitative Data

UCSF Mission Bay Campus, San Francisco CA

Data derived from qualitative research studies typically consist of large quantities of text and other materials. To gain insights into these materials, researchers have developed a series of best practices for organizing and interpreting their data. This intensive three-day workshop offers a comprehensive hands- on introduction to the principles of qualitative data coding and analysis. In this training, we emphasize that the organization of the data through coding and other techniques does more than provide organizational structure to the material but is a fundamental component of the interpretive process.

Through a mix of mini lectures, group discussions, and extensive hands-on engagement with a qualitative data set, you will develop an in-depth understanding of the strategies for organizing qualitative data and the ways in which these strategies can be leveraged to produce rich and nuanced insights.

We will use Dedoose, a cloud-based application that supports qualitative and mixed methods research. Although this is not a software training course, the techniques and strategies you learn in the workshop will be applicable to any qualitative software package. Dedoose offers a free 30-day trial, and students will be asked to take advantage of this offer.

After the workshop portion is completed, we will offer a series of office hours, which you can join to discuss coding and analytic issues in your own work.

By the end of this training on qualitative data analysis,  students will be able to:

  • Understand the conceptual & pragmatic issues pertaining to qualitative data analysis, including
  • clear guidelines for how to get started
  • Describe & apply common tools used during analysis e.g., codebooks, memos, summary tables
  • Employ strategies for incorporating participant characteristics into your organizational framework
  • Develop meaningful coding categories
  • Identify best practices for coding individually or in teams

This training is designed for professionals in healthcare or public health settings, though its foundational concepts and skills are applicable across various fields. Whether you are a novice who is new to qualitative research, an investigator preparing to launch a qualitative or mixed method project, or an experienced qualitative researcher aiming to receive additional training, this workshop offers valuable insights and practical strategies to enhance your ability to work with qualitative data.
