Who is eligible?
The Visiting Professor program is designed for scientists and investigators who have not yet obtained R01 funding from the NIH or equivalent funding from another agency. We seek scientists conducting HIV prevention research and HIV care research with minority communities in the United States. Please review the following administrative and program criteria.
1. Administrative criteria
To be eligible for the program, the applicant must:
- Be a US citizen or be a Permanent Resident (have a Green Card).
- Be affiliated with an institution that is eligible to receive federal money.
- Be eligible to be a Principal Investigator at their home institution.
- Not have received funding as the Principal Investigator of a funded NIH R01 or equivalent grant.
- Not have delinquent student loans.
Also, those applying to the NIAID track must be "early career faculty," meaning they are within the first 8 years of their first faculty appointment. This restriction is required by the funder.
If you have a K Award from NIH, or have a proposal for a K Award under review, please talk with us about it prior to preparing your application for this program. Although having a K award does not make you ineligible to participate, a K award may provide full-time support for your research training and career development, so we need to address concerns about receiving a temporary summer faculty appointment at UCSF from this program while you have a K award.
2. Program criteria
To be selected for the program, the applicant must demonstrate:
- Experience conducting HIV research and publishing scientific manuscripts.
- History of obtaining funding for HIV or related research (e.g., small or exploratory grants, including state, local, intramural, and university grants).
- Preferred: The most competitive applicants and their applications will also demonstrate experience with or interest in conducting HIV or related research with implications for populations with high levels of health disparities, especially in US-based settings.
