Seeking Safety

Seeking Safety is an evidence-informed intervention adapted by HIV experts and community members to support people with HIV who are affected by trauma and/or addiction. Designed to be safe, optimistic, and empowering, Seeking Safety helps clients focus on the impact of trauma in the present rather than revisiting past experiences. The intervention also meets clients where they are along the continuum of substance use, offering an engaging and flexible approach to care.

This Implementation Guide was developed through the Using Evidence-Informed Interventions to Improve Health Outcomes among People Living with HIV (E2i) initiative, which tested Seeking Safety in Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) settings. The guide provides tools, tips, and resources to support replication of Seeking Safety in RWHAP and other HIV service organizations.

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is an evidence-based intervention that helps improve health outcomes for people with HIV who are also living with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Adapted by HIV experts in collaboration with community members, CPT uses cognitive behavioral therapy techniques to reduce PTSD symptoms. Through structured sessions with a behavioral health therapist, clients learn to recognize and address the impact of trauma on their thoughts, emotions, and overall well-being.

This Implementation Guide was developed as part of the Using Evidence-Informed Interventions to Improve Health Outcomes among People Living with HIV (E2i) initiative, which tested CPT in Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) settings and evaluated its effectiveness.

The guide provides practical tools, tips, and resources to support replication of CPT in RWHAP and other HIV service organizations.

This intervention integrates buprenorphine treatment for opioid use disorder directly into HIV primary care settings. By addressing both conditions in one location, the program helps reduce opioid use and overdose while improving engagement in HIV care.

The Implementation Guide—developed as part of Using Evidence-Informed Interventions to Improve Health Outcomes among People Living with HIV (E2i)—offers practical steps, tools, and resources to support replication of integrated buprenorphine treatment in Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) settings and other HIV service organizations.
