Title: Food for Thought:  Addressing the Vicious Cycle of Food Insecurity and Poor Health

Dr. Weiser will present over a decade’s worth of empirical research on how food insecurity contributes to poor health for HIV and other chronic illnesses, and how novel food security interventions can interrupt the vicious cycle of food insecurity and poor health.

Dr. Sheri Weiser, MD, MPH, MA, is an internist, and Associate Professor of Medicine at the Division of HIV, ID and Global Medicine at UCSF.  She earned her medical degree from Harvard Medical School, Master’s degrees from Harvard University and University of California, Berkeley, and completed her residency training in internal medicine at UCSF.  Her research program focuses on how food insecurity and other structural factors impact treatment outcomes for HIV and other chronic diseases, with a particular focus on food security interventions as a way to improve health outcomes both domestically and internationally. She has published over 100 manuscripts on this and similar topics, and has been the principal investigator on over 20 research grants in the area.
