NIH Requiring Single IRB Review of All Domestic Multi-site Research: What this will mean for investigators
After January 25th 2018, all domestic multi-site research applications will be expected to include a plan for single IRB (sIRB) review, rather than the current system of having all participating institutions submit to their own local IRB. This appears to streamline the IRB process, because there will only be one IRB for the entire project. But the sIRB still carries responsibilities, as well as new demands, on the part of investigators, both at the lead institution and participating institutions. This town hall will be an opportunity to learn more about sIRB and what it may mean for your future research.
William J. Woods, Ph.D., is Professor of Medicine in the Division of Prevention Sciences. Bill recently served as Vice Chair on the ZSFGH panel of the UCSF IRB. The Intervention and Implementation Core of the CAPS center grant supports his effort providing human subjects research consultation to CAPS investigators and staff. He has conducted social/behavioral science research since his first involvement in AIDS research with the UCSF Department of Psychiatry in 1984.
